Coping with retirement
For some retirement is what they have been working toward for years and they are delighted the day has actually arrived.
Now there is time to do all those things work prevented you from achieving.
However, for others, they begin to feel redundant and are worried that their life will no longer have a purpose.
If you are one of the latter, you need to think about all the things you can do to fill in the time.
Take a holiday – if you have the money, a post-retirement holiday will work wonders and could give you a whole new interest.
Volunteering – some people feel the need to be useful and therefore taking up volunteering for a favourite charity or simply helping a neighbour out. It is a fact that working with the under-privileged often helps us put things in proper perspective in our own lives. So many volunteers have confessed to have experienced a sense of fulfilment by contributing actively to some social cause.
Get a pet – if you have not had time for a pet because of work commitments, now is the time to indulge. It is well know that owning a pet can increase your sense of happiness.
Take up a hobby - now you have all the time in the world to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. If you’ve dreamt of swimming with fish underwater, for instance, take a shot at scuba diving! For the less adventurous, take up walking or reading or even learn to play a musical instrument. It is never too late to try something new.
Family – you will now have more time for family so if you are lucky enough to have grandchildren, spend some time with them. They will keep you young.
Study – you could always go back to school and study something you have always wanted to learn about. Try a new language or computer skills. The world is your oyster.
There are many more outlets for someone with time on their hands, so don’t let retirement get you down. Enjoy the ‘grey age’ and have fun. Stay fit and healthy and you will have the time of your life.
